Significance of standardized tissue sampling and pathological report for biliary tract tumor through multidisciplinary collaboration

  • Comprehensive, standardized, accurate tissue sampling and pathological report are of great importance for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis assessment of biliary tract tumor. Tissue sampling of biliary tract tumor is currently non standardized, leading to inaccurate pathological report and tumor staging. Therefore, it is urgent to establish a standardized process of tissue sampling and pathological report regarding  biliary tract tumor. This paper discusses three aspects regarding biliary tract tumor, including the importance of standardized tissue sampling and pathological report, suggestions about main points of intraoperative and postoperative tissue sampling, and main points and standards of pathological report. Surgeons and pathologists should enhance multidisciplinary collaboration and participate in tissue sampling together. A standardized process of tissue sampling and pathological report for biliary tract tumor should be established to improve the pathological diagnostic level of biliary tract tumor in China.
