Strategies on surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease with contents of upper gastrointestinal tract reflux into esophagus. GERD is a frequently encountered problem in Western populations. Now, GERD is also common in China. Although the effect of proton pump inhibitor acid suppression was significant, there were complex pathogenesis of GERD and many risk factors, and patients need to increase the dose of the drug or in combination with other drugs. So more patients need surgical treatment to avoid or reduce the dose of drug treatment. Surgeons performing operation of the standardization should comprehensively understand the indications of surgery and pathogenesis of GERD, meanwhile, the standard treatment process, multidisciplinary team, follow up and database should be built or strengthened in order to guide the treatment of GERD.
