Abstract: Bariatric and metabolic surgery is a clinical specialty that employs minimally invasive surgical interventions to modify gastrointestinal anatomy for the treatment of obesity and its related comorbidities. Its primary objectives extend beyond weight loss to fundamentally amelio-rate or even reverse obesity-associated metabolic disorders, reduce long-term complication risks, and enhance patients' quality of life and lifelong health outcomes. However, the high-quality develop-ment of bariatric and metabolic surgery in China currently faces two critical challenges: how to improve clinical expertise, healthcare quality and safety standards and how to enhance the disci-pline's capacity for original innovation and sustainable development. The authors focus on three key dimensions: leveraging clinical data to identify disciplinary development trajectories, empowering disciplinary advancement through scientific research, and promoting multidisciplinary collaboration to refine developmental paradigms.
