Abstract: Hernia and abdominal wall surgery is a relatively new subspecialty of surgery. In the international arena, although China start late, remarkable achievements have been made after more than 20 years of development, which has established an important position in this field and laid a solid foundation for the future development of hernia and abdominal wall surgery in China. At the same time, domestic researchers should also be aware of their own shortcomings clearly. The authors consult relevant literatures at home and abroad, summarize and look forward to the future development of hernia and abdominal wall surgery in China from the following aspects： promotion of standardized and refined surgical methods scientifically and effectively, innovation of surgical techniques, conceptual changing and scientific selection in the application of repair materials, permeating to other disciplines, such as parastomal hernia prevention after Miles surgery and abdominal wall defect repair after breast reconstruction, and improving the data registration and quality control system of hernia diseases, etc.
